Szántód is one of the youngest villages in Somogy County one side and one part of Somogy County having been inhabited for the longest time. It is mentioned in the deed of foundations of the Abbey in Tihany that was dated in 1055. However it has been an independent settlement since 1997 only. Ferry connection with the north shore is as old as the settlement itself. The word “ferry” can be found in an estate registering document dated in 1211. Ferry provides good and quick connection and safe... tovább crossing between the shores of the Lake Balaton. Among the sights in Szántód we have to mention the sculpture of Saint Christopher the protective saint of the traders and the historical building of ferry-inn. On the wall of the ferry-inn there is a bronze picture of Csokonai Vitéz Mihály a famous Hungarian poet. The farm-building complex in Szántódpuszta was awarded with Europe Nostra Prize in 1955 preserves the history of the Hungarian agriculture and makes home for various events including the days of Saint Christopher and various exhibitions. We can see here the Saint Christopher chapel having been constructed in 1735, from where nice view can be seen to the Lake Balaton the Hungarian Sea. In the chapel every year there is a service devoted to memory of Saint Christopher when the vehicles are blessed. In the puszta there are sport programs with horses. Those longing after gastronomic delights, a 2oo-year old wine cellar is available for tasting the wines. It is a quiet resort place therefore very popular among the families with small children. In the beach the water is not deep. This peaceful settlement provides good possibilities to those who want to have quiet relaxation after the busy life in the big cities.
