The name was formed from a personal name by Hungarian naming. It was first mentioned in historical documents in 1243. It was an inhabited place, with short intervals during the Turkish time. In later centuries it was mainly lived by Calvinists. It is famous for the „Mohai Ágnes” spring, whose mineral water has been bottled for more than 100 years. Its popultion is only 467.
