Máriapócs is one of the most famous pilgrimage place of the historical Hungary 300 years ago. The Europe wide well known settlement is situated int he south part of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, 280 km from Budapest and 30 km from Nyíregyháza. The small town has 2200 inhabitants. Good infrastructure and well accessible by car or train. The name Pócs occured first in diploma sin 1280. the region belonged to the cour ant the Báthory and Rákóczi families. Máriapócs was announced with the right of... tovább holding markets and the right of borough in 1816 which was owned up to 1872. the national ant international attraction of Máriapócs raised by being a pilgrimage place since the beginning of the XVIII th century. That is why the „basilica minor” the shrine church with ist diginity and rich baroque style building has century role int he small town. The fame of Máriapócs comes from the several times weeping picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Basilita monks were settled and created their monastery was an important religious center until 1950 but outstanding development was int he recent years and got back its municipal rigth in 1993. the outstandign day is the history of the small town is 18th August, 1991 when pope John Paul II did holy liturgy in Hugarian langaiage in front of the shrine picture. For the memory of this event the new bronze gate of the basilica and a memeorial park with a big Jesus Christ’s sculpture int he center was built int he pope’s pilgrimnage place. Máriapócs has outstanding tourism. Believers arrive daily to the Weeping Maria thoughout trhe year.
