The first secondary grammar school of the Jászság region was founded in Jászapáti in 1767 and then it was moved to Jászberény where it belonged to the atholic Church. In 1896 the school was secularized. During its long period of life the secondary school has educated several outstanding personalities: Dr. Árpád Darázs conductor, Alajos Tarnay piano artist, János Thorma the founder of the Painting Park in Nagybánya, Péter Horváth historian, Jazygo Captain, director of the secondary school, János Berze Nagy ethnoresearcher.
