Déryné Széppataki Róza was born in 1793 in Jászberény and died in 1872 in Miskolc. She was a leading figure in Hungarian language theater with the greatest success coming in 1837, in Kolozsvár (today known as Cluj Napoca in Romania). She was also a celebrated actress first at the Hungarian Theater in Budapest and then later at the National Theater. The statue was erected in 1961 on May Day Island (today's Margit Island). A memorial room was made in 1999 and placed in the Déryné Cultural Center and can be seen during opening hours.
