During the times of the Árpád kings, ermine was hunted for around Hőgyész, hence its name. Under the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa, in 1753, it acquired the status of town. The German Collection at Hőgyész remembers the German settlers who arrived here in the 1720s. The Baroque chateau was erected by the Apponyi family around the year 1760.
