Stone wall around the town

Settlement: Hódmezővásárhely
Address: 6800 Hódmezővásárhely, Kossuth tér

After the great flood in 1879 in Szeged (the neighbour city) they started to build the dike around the town. They built a 17.5 km long dirt dike and a 3 km long brick wall on the southern part of the town. The stone wall – following the former bank of Hód-lake – had 13 hatchways. Nowadays only 4 remain at Csillag, Száraz, Királyszék and Árpá street. The stone wall – stretching from Bocskai street to Tarján - is unique in this area.
