In the First World War lot of inhabitants died from Hódmezővásárhely. Between 1914 and 1918 15 thousand people were taken to the army. János Pásztor who was a soldier himself created this monumet with deep feelings. It is one of his late works but it is connected to some other first world war monuments and memorial tablets. He illustrates the soldier on his horse during the battle. On each side there is a small panel, these panels illustrate events from the First World War. (János Pásztor (1881-1945) was a local sculptor. His early works were classicist portraits. His main work is Ferenc Rákóczi the second. (Budapest, 1937)
