Housed in part of the recently restored Károlyi Palace, home of the Petofi Museum of Literature, the Károlyi Restaurant and Café is an unassuming, reasonably priced place to take relatives or friends for a bit of local atmosphere, particularly when you wish to show them you know a quiet „secret spot” away from the busy sidewalk cafés.<br> The attractive, Biedemeier-esque interior seats around 120, while there’s room for around 100 more outdoors in the courtyard underneath the Chesnut trees, offering a shaded nook to cool off during the dog days of summer.<br> The menu is largely comprised of a range of traditional Hungarian favorites, such as roast goose leg with braised red cabbage or catfish stew with cottage noodles.There are also salads and lighter „Mediterranean” options. Overall the food is fresh and well prepared, and though often quite rich, reveals some imaginative twists.<br> The nice wine list is in keeping with the modest intentions of the place, with most bottles under HUF 3,500, besides a handful of more expensive offerings.<br> The Karolyi is a relaxing spot on central Pest, and excellent value for money.
