Megközelíthető: 22 Balassagyarmat and surroundings When the conquering Hungarians came here, they found a Slav people in place. The arrival of the Hungarians had an important effect on the religion. One indication of this is the fact that one of the seven conquering Hungarian tribes was called Kürtgyarmat, from which Balassagyarmat derives its name. (They were seven Hungarian tribes involved in the conquest: they were thr Nyék, the Megyer, the Kürtgyarmat, the Tarján, the Jenő, the Kér and the... tovább nd the Keszi.) All of them are recalled by the names used in the county of Nógrád even today. Balassagyarmat has a pecial atmosphere today, which attact visitors. This distinction has been earned by its historic atmosphere and spirit. Our national culture has strong roots here. A stroll through the sreets revelas the plaques commemorating the life and work of writers and poets Balassagyarmat has its place in literature. Nyírjes is a beautiful spot in the neighbourhood. Nestled among conifer and broad-leaved woods, there are seven artifical lakes here amid this nature protection area. Between Balassagyarmat and its bounds, Ipolyszög is to be found the last remnant of the once extensive flood plain, a marshland covering more than 100 hectares and a part of the Duna Ipoly National Park. Grey herons and bitterns are among the birdlife to be seen here. The waterlife here is unique in Nógrád.
