The village is inhabited since more than 1000 years. Its name originates from the ancient twelve angle church – the rotunda – in which 12 arches contained the statues of the 12 apostles. It was built in Byzantine style before 1000 in the place of the recent reform church. In 1318 Apostag became an important historical scene as the meeting of the Archbishop of Kalocsa and bishops of the region took place here to organize revolt agains King Károly Róbert. The late baroque synagogue – which is a... tovább a scheduled national monument - was renoveted in 1989. During the reparation the original inner structure, the 3 part „Czech” arch, the ornate ark, readers platform, gallery and internal decoration was well reserved. This outstanding achievment was rewarded by „Europa Nostra” Prize. The building now hosts an exhibition of Hungarian writer Lajos Nagy born in the neighbouring Telkibányitelek. Opposite the synagogue in the Jewish cemetary a tumb-stone from 1650 can be found. On the Danube side Sárosi-forest and Öreg-island (Old-island) offers pleasant relaxation.
